With a large portion of teams and employees currently working remotely due to Covid-19, there have been a number of memes floating around online these days expressing this simple truth: People aren't just simply working from home right now. They are at home in the middle of a crisis, trying to get work done.

Despite the fact that it’s a challenge, companies and teams still have work to get done and one way companies can boost success in that realm is to get clear, focused, and simplify.

People aren’t just simply working from home right now. They are at home in the middle of a crisis, trying to get work done.

What we’re up against.

The reality is that people are facing all kinds of dynamics and distractions right now while trying to navigate working remotely. From concern for their friends, families, and own health, to barking dogs, a neighbor mowing their lawn during a video call, or kids who need to be homeschooled and supervised — there’s a lot going on.

A byproduct of this reality is that it's unrealistic to expect that we can hold teams and individuals to the same high bar that we always do. The truth is, like it or not, that right now engagement, productivity, and morale are not at 100% for the time being.

Get clear, keep it simple.

One way that companies, teams, and individuals can more effectively remain productive is to prioritize and simplify. Getting crystal clear on exactly what is the right work that needs to be done right now, and then keeping it simple and remaining focused on that work is key.

You don’t need a crystal ball to understand that things will not always be as they are today.

What companies are experiencing is unprecedented, and it’s also temporary. You don’t need a crystal ball to understand that things will not always be as they are today. Yes, the Covid-19 pandemic will cause some changes but we will do what humans always do; adapt and settle as things return to either a very different, or very similar new normal.

As that happens, and the feeling or normality returns, routine will return, familiarity will return, individuals will be less distracted and eventually back to their old selves.

In the mean time we’ve got to find a way to thrive within our current reality. To be as productive as possible now, we can take some wisdom from the old saying:

“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”

Keep things simple; get clear, focused, and prioritize.
