Developing healthy boundaries as much as possible around work time and personal time is critical to avoiding massive burnout while working from home. It may be difficult depending on your situation, but be intentional and do everything in your power to take care of yourself.

Better to pump the brakes on being ultra productive than to burn out and become useless.

Tips for boundaries to avoid burnout.

  • Work a set schedule, like from 8 to 5 with a full break for lunch. Don't work untill 7:00 at night or put in 10 hour days, 5 days a week.

  • Block out calendar time for yourself. Set aside half an hour on your calendar where you go and take a walk, or stretch and decompress.

  • Have routines for yourself to create consistency as much as possible.

Ultimately it comes down to you and what you need to stay energized and afloat. The same things don’t work for everyone because we all have different needs and environments that we thrive in. Tune into your self awareness and find the things that work for you and your own rhythms.

Be proactive.

Don’t wait until you’re completely wrung out to start thinking about creating some boundaries and balance for yourself.

Don't wait until you're completely wrung out to start thinking about creating some boundaries and balance for yourself. Be proactive and intentional by putting systems in place to avoid getting to the point where it becomes a problem for your mental and physical health.

Mental stress has a major impact on your overall well being, so take stock and evaluate what you need to ensure your health. Creating boundaries for yourself around work is an element of working from home that you can have some control over. Get as clear possible about when is work, and when isn’t.

I am fully aware that depending on your situation this is not easy. You may have kids running around and interrupting video calls, and dogs barking, and a hard time finding quiet space to get things done. As much as possible, set boundaries, block off time for yourself, stop work when your work day is done, and take care of yourself. You’re no good to anyone if you’re totally burned out.
