Five Appreciations Week: Simple and powerful.

This week’s Culture Drop is all about something that feels good, costs nothing, and can make a big difference: appreciation & gratitude. Welcome to Five Appreciations Week. A simple, meaningful challenge to recognize a few people who make your work and life better.

Whether you’re part of or leading a team, or just navigating the day-to-day, taking a moment to genuinely say “I appreciate you” goes a long way.

An easy assignment: Appreciate five people this week.

The idea is straightforward. This week, reach out to five people and find a nice way to express your appreciation. That’s it. It doesn’t need to be some huge, grand gesture, just make it sincere.

It could be:

  • A quick text to a colleague who always steps up

  • A Slack message to your boss thanking them for their support

  • An email to a teammate who crushed a recent project

  • A phone call to a friend who always shows up

  • A face-to-face moment of gratitude with someone in your life

Make it genuine. This can maybe only take a minute or two, but who knows, maybe it makes someone’s whole week.

Bonus appreciation - give a shout out to HR.

Trust me, your HR people have seen some things. Send them some love.

Here’s one more you might consider adding to your list: your HR person or team.

If you’ve never worked in HR, you definitely do not realize how much complexity they manage behind the scenes. From navigating “tricky” interpersonal issues, and dealing with the sometimes stupid and/or illegal things that employees and bosses do, to keeping the company compliant (and sane), HR often carries the emotional and legal weight of the organization — without getting much support or appreciation in return.

So this week, whether it's your go-to HR partner or the whole people team, take a moment to appreciate what they do.

Trust me, your HR people have seen some things. Send them some love.

Praise is a currency, go spend it.

Appreciation is easy to do. And it builds relationships, strengthens teams, and creates the kind of work environment people actually want to be part of.

Praise is a currency, go spend it.
