How do you want to be known as a leader, colleague, coworker, and human being?

This week I’m sharing a simple exercise for identifying how you want to impact others and show up in your role/life.

*Bonus: We created a free downloadable activity worksheet to guide you through this, the download link is at the end of this blog!

An important element of self awareness is to reflect on how you want to impact people and how you want to be seen and known by others.

It’s an important element of self awareness to reflect on how you want to impact people and how you want to be seen and known by others.

Do you want to be known as a motivator? Someone who is positive and generous? A creative problem solver?

Take a moment today to reflect on how you want to be known and impact the people in your life. A simplified way to do this is to identity your “three words” that embody who you are at your best when you imagine the most ideal version of yourself. The worksheet we created for this will be helpful and provide a lot of inspiration.

Defining your own values

This is a really simple exercise to define more clearly your own personal values and who you want to be to the other people in your life. This is beneficial for a number of reasons — let’s say, for example, that you work at a large company with established corporate values. Some of those values might really resonate with you, but some might not personally as an individual, or they just might not be the ones you’d choose for yourself.

This exercise is a way to think more personally about your own individual impact and how you want to show up for others. It’s one way to create more meaning behind the work you do as an individual and as you move through the world. You can choose how you show up and reflect your values onto others.

Activities like this help build understanding on teams and allow people to know each other more individually.

Some final notes

It’s also a great idea to do this as a team and to know the ‘three words’ everyone else on the team chooses for themselves. We’re all so different and everyone will likely have widely varying answers.

Kari on our team had a really lovely way to put his when we were discussing it which is that “These three words are like giving yourself a compliment to live up to.” I loved that framing of this, wanted to share.

“Three Words” activity

I’ve put together a really simple worksheet to guide teams and individuals through the process of selecting their own three words. There are some thought-starters and reflective questions, plus a great big list of a possible words for inspiration.

Download the free worksheet below. Also, we’d love to hear what three words you choose, let us know in the video comments on YouTube:

It will auto download as a PDF, and we promise there’s nothing sketchy about it.

Enjoy!
