The Courage Required for Effective Leadership

Being a leader requires a significant amount of courage.

It’s needed for feedback conversations, coaching, managing change, and a number of other circumstances in leadership.

If you want to be a great leader, one element of that equation is being able to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. Leadership requires an immense amount of bravery and courage for a number of situations; tough conversations with employees, navigating conflict or uncertainty, facing business challenges, taking ownership for mistakes and failures. Courage to take on and navigate challenges like these is essential.

Growth mindset & courage

Having a growth mindset, which means (among other things) being open to learning, making mistakes as you improve, and facing uncertainty head on are all interconnected with courage.

Leadership is tough. It takes a lot of different skills sets and experiences in order to continuously improve at it. Failure, change, and growth are all elements of what it takes to learn to move forward.

Making unpopular decisions

Making difficult decisions, even unpopular ones, such as firing someone, requires courage. Leaders must stand behind their decisions with grace, bringing people along without alienating them. Leadership demands courage in various scenarios, whether leading a sports team, a business team, parenting, or any place else in life where you find yourself at the helm. During your time as a leader, you'll often encounter new scenarios and challenges that are unfamiliar and require tapping into your courage.

Embrace uncertainty, learn from new experiences, and make courage something you can access when a situation arises that requires it. You’ll never be perfect, but the pluck and courage to face and learn from tough situations and challenges will serve you well as a leader.
