Comfort is Counter to Ambition

This week’s mantra: Comfort is counter to ambition.

The cost for growth and change is comfort.

If you want to improve at anything in your life and level up in any regard, that growth and improvement will come at the cost of some comfort. Whether you’re an individual, a leadership team, a business — this is true for everyone in all walks of life.

Growth and comfort have a hard time being in the same room together.

Staying at the same level that you’re currently in is familiar and naturally more comfortable than upward movement.

However, if you want to grow, if you want to be better or more skilled or more disciplined — whether that’s in your communication or interpersonal skills, your courage, your artistic passion, your relationships, etc. — if you want to improve, you have to leave (at least some) comfort behind.

You have to get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. Change and growth means facing uncertainty, it means choosing the messy process of learning and failing, and also doing things poorly that you’re not great at yet. It’s not easy an easy path, and the bigger the ambition and the greater the distance the more it will cost you your comfort along the way.

The only way to become better at something is to crawl through the desert of imperfection and failure, and charge on.

Final thoughts

The benefit of having improved at something is wonderful, but there is beauty in the mess and journey to greatness. Becoming better at handling the discomfort of growth is so powerful, keep it in your pocket for the coming year.
